UK Bank Privatization Likely to Benefit India’s Outsourcing Industry

UK Bank Privatization Likely to Benefit India’s Outsourcing Industry

UK govt’s decision to return full control to its top notch banks might boost outsourcing industry in India.

Haryana, India: UK Government’s recent decision to return the reigns to its top banks might increase outsourcing projects to India. The economic slump has caused banks to cut down costs and take some harsh decisions as far as recruitment, IT or handling non-core functions are concerned.

Regaining the private control, mortgage lenders and leading financial ventures like Lloyds would definitely want to outsource their back functions and IT projects to India. After a recent signal from the UK government to fully privatize Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds etc. industry experts speculate that this will initiate more outsourcing measures from top banks. Some of these top banks who are still recovering from the 2008 financial downturn and showing signs of slow revenue growth would invest more in outsourcing to save on onsite CAPEX.

It was the UK government that had rescued its top notch banks during the global economic downturn between 2008 and 2009. Now, the government is trying to re-privatize the banks before the country goes to election in 2015. Offshore units especially based out in India have good trade ties with UK. Lloyds and RBS are already doing business in India with help of its outsourcing partners. The UK bank privatization would enhance trade relations between India and UK further strengthening their outsourcing relationship. India has great IT expertise, the resource found here is extremely skilled and experienced in major outsourced domains. India is a major outsourcing provider in domains like mobile banking, infrastructure support and upgrades. From IT and Technology perspective, India is known to latest of everything.

Peter Redshaw, Managing Vice-President at Gartner Inc. speaking out on outsourcing capabilities of India said that “They (the big banks) have already done quite a lot of outsourcing—there will be some places where they could do that. Multi-tenanted utilities is one option—but big banks don’t like the loss of control that implies. Hence the interest from big banks in private cloud computing—these will be predominantly internal projects”.

Banking sector is going through a rough patch; earning revenue and meeting targets is going to be a huge battle for financial sector. Instinctively, financial services are turning towards offshore units to strengthen their operations on low budget and to recover from downturn with ease.

India’s KPO industry expected to touch $30 billion by 2015: Study

India’s KPO industry expected to touch $30 billion by 2015: Study

The Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) industry is expected to reach USD 30 Billion threshold by 2015 according to a study. At present, KPOs in India generates revenue of USD 20 billion.

According to the study conducted by ASSOCHAM, despite economic slowdown, KPO industry in India has managed to record a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 30%. In the paper titled Current scenario of Indian KPO Industry released by ASSOCHAM it is highlighted that “the rising demand for profession-based services is expected to drive the growth in the industry in areas of research for capital and financial markets, legal works, editing jobs for international publishing houses among many others”.

Commenting on this recent revelation ASSOCHAM Secretary General Mr. D S Rawat, said presently, “domestic KPO industry is facing stiff competition from countries like Philippines, Russia, China, Poland and Hungary as these are emerging strong contenders for KPO business in view of qualified KPO professionals, low-cost advantages, domain expertise, location advantage, sales and marketing capabilities and data compliance”. Mr. Rawat also added that “it is difficult for KPO companies to always find a qualified, experienced and talented workforce in India. Considering the situation that there is no dearth of engineers, doctors, MBAs, lawyers etc. in India, the KPO industry is banking on availability of this talented pool to fill up its seats, but now they are facing the supply crunch”.

“It is the kind of shortfall predicted between target and realistic growth that is worrying. If the industry is unable to sustain the momentum, it is quite possible that the other alternative destinations will become increasingly attractive for the clients. The nature of the KPO work makes is easier for clients to switch”, adds Mr. Rawat.

KPO industry in India is thriving and has its roots in almost all services-starting from market research to business analytics for Medical, Financial, Legal and many more domains.

The Rise of Captives in India

The Rise of Captives in India

India is a popular destination for starting and managing a captive centre. From banking to IT, huge talent pool, availability of resources and cost-effectiveness has attracted many Fortune 500 companies to start their captives in India. A captive centre is a fully owned subsidiary or facility for banking, IT support, software development, engineering services, back office data processing, business process outsourcing, KPOs, RPOs and call centres.

Under this model the role of a third party service provider is phased out and the operations are performed overseas; however, not outsourced. The control of the revenue (profit and loss both), operations and other major decisions is always in the hands of the parent company under a captive model. Around 250 corporations out of the Fortune 500 companies’ list have their captive centres in India. According to an online research, around 500 captive centres are operating out of India and predominantly, out of this, financial services and software firms from US form the major chunk. GE’ captive unit GECIS (now Genpact) was the flag bearer of captive initiatives in India. Several MNCs, mostly financial services and banks followed GECIS’ suit and established their own captives and BPO units in India. Most recently companies like Wells Fargo, J P Morgan, and Fidelity have also set up their captives in India. Companies like Bank of America, Citi Bank, HSBC, Deloitte and more, who had set up their captives during the initial phase of the BPO boom in India, are expanding their businesses and growing tremendously. Although most of the initial captive centres have been bought out by companies like TCS, Cognizant and Infosys, latecomers as well as new captive initiatives continue to grow.

Why captives?

It is more than obvious that cost and labour (skilled) is the primary reason for global corporations to opt for captives; however, there are various other good reasons for captives to come to India.

Globalization: Globalization has facilitated the coming of major MNCs to Asia. It is now easier to trade with other countries and trade in other countries. With relaxation in laws related to setting up of industry or offices in other countries, the whole outsourcing process has become seamless.

Technology: Technology boom has shifted the focus to requirement of equipment, technical expertise and IT to leverage various functions and businesses. The cost of operating and managing technology infrastructure in a captive centre location is nothing compared to managing it on the home grounds.

Corporate Identity: With Globalization establishing a firm corporate identity in a foreign country has become highly important. There is a need to expand the horizons and globalization has ensured that no big MNC goes without a branch or an office in other countries or continents.

To conclude while the rise of captives in India is driven by many circumstances (favourable), another upside to add to it is the fact that a third party BPO or a service provider can also be developed to function as a captive. The third party office space providers with IT infrastructure services can be easily customized to function as a captive for any major multinational company in India. This minimizes cost significantly while creating new business opportunities.

Tips for Choosing Offshore Data Centre Solutions

Tips for Choosing Offshore Data Centre Solutions

Instead of housing and maintaining Data Centres, organizations are looking into offshore options for outsourcing their data centre needs. Colocation of enterprise servers, developing a recovery system or exploring cloud computing, all these options have shifted the focus to offsite. Choosing a good offshore data centre to house a company’s server and associated infrastructure is not an easy task. Numerous site visits, meetings and discussions goes into it before reaching on a unanimous decision. Lets explore few tips for choosing the right data centre for your business.

data center

Redundancy

Redundancy in case of computer engineering is the “duplication of critical components or functions of a system with intention of increasing their reliability, usually in the case of a backup or fail safe”. Redundancy is something that is absolutely necessary in case of data centres. A data centre should come with a minimum primary back up of all critical components. Everything that is necessary from business continuity angle should be present in the data centre location or facility. Power generators, HVAC, fire suppression should be in place. Also to support the primary backup, a secondary backup system should also be in place. The offsite facility should also maintain and store reserve fuel and should come with proper cooling system for the servers.

Telecommunication Infrastructure

A robust telecommunication infrastructure is highly important for businesses. Your offsite data centre should be well equipped to provide network neutral access to prime telecom carriers and internet backbones. This would benefit the client companies by providing direct access to national, international, public and private networks; while also supporting the wireless and fibre optic connectivity. This way the uptime increases to the maximum providing satisfaction to the customer. The data access is secure and reliable. 24x 7 technical support and IT staff should be available to maintain and update the network.

SLAs

Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are important to be defined and maintained. SLAs define and ensure quality of service, power maintenance, temperature support and network uptime. Evaluate the terms of the SLA to understand its impact on your contract. Check SLA for the guarantee they promise and then choose your data centre.

Security

Physical security is an important aspect of data centre location. Look for a data centre offshore that offers high level security system. Proper stationing of guards inside and outside the premises on 24x7 rotational shifts, CCTV cameras installed throughout the facility, also look for advanced security solutions like access card entry, electronic punching and fingerprint recognition systems.
